With social media being so new, at least to the general public, I understand why there is so much confusion as to what it is and how it can be beneficial to business. You are right about having focus. Let's face it, most people on these sites are there to promote their business, products, services etc.... That being said, they keyword here is "social". I really see these sites as more avenues for networking; really no different than becoming a member of your local chamber of commerce, just on a much wider scale. The plus side for me is how much I have learned from all the people I've encountered.
